In January 2004, Bells of the Sound announced their third composition contest at Pinnacle 2004 in Dallas, TX. Composers were asked to go international and let the places and peoples of the world be the inspiration for a handbell composition in the Ring Around the World! contest. Eighteen entries were received by the blind trust established for this event by the August 15, 2004 deadline from 7 states and 3 foreign countries. Bells of the Sound reviewed each piece and ranked them according to the contest criteria: Audience appeal; Playability; Following the Theme; Musicality; and Creativity. It was no easy task! The winning composition as well as several other contest submissions will be premiered at Bells of the Sound's concert series in Spring 2005.

Bells of the Sound was pleased to award First Place to Matthew Prins of Richmond, VA for "Comrades, Haste! Faster the Steel Press!". Inspired by the iron and steel factories in the Russian city of Cherepovets, this is an exicting and challenging composition that features marching, deskbells and LMPI - we're looking for an anvil! Matthew is a member of the James River Ringers and has composed and arranged several dozen handbell pieces.

Honorable Mention prizes were awarded to Brenna Lehman of Kent, WA for "Tri Eireannach Amhran", Nan Beth Walton of Seattle, WA for "The Banks of the Dnipro River" and Carol Lynn Mizell of Denton, TX for "The Frogs and Princes of Lake Texoma".
